GTM National Estuarine Rsearch Reserve

I volunteered with the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve under the guidance of the Department of Environmental protection for two projects. The focus of the projects were to provide assistance to GTM and the DEP with their multi-phase habitat and protection and coastal restoration initiatives.

The first project was focused on removing non-native invasive species of grasses that were interfering with the nesting habits of gopher tortoises from the shoreline. The root system for the invasive species are largely expansive hindering the gopher tortoise's ability to dig into the soil to bury its eggs. Removal of the invasive species proved to be quite effective and soon the population sprung back.

The other project was focused to establish a reef to provide a habitat for the Oyster Cather bird. We were on boats transporting bagged oysters to an oyster rake on the Matanzas river where a failing Oyster Catcher bird nest was routinely being washed away by large boat wake. I served on the river team, working in the water to receive the incoming boats and managing the off-loading of bagged oysters to create an oyster reed situated to protect the nest.

Having the ability to participate in an Alternative Break provides a distinct feeling that is unparalleled. Seeing the work we did provided a sense of accomplishment and that feeling was only bolstered when we head that both populations started bouncing back. If I had the opportunity again, I would go back without a second of hesitation.

Wish Upon A Star

Wish Upon A Star is an annual holiday drive program put on by the Office of Civic Engagement and Service, in conjunction with the Center for Leadership and Activities. This program provides holiday gifts to children in the Gainesville community who are in the foster care system or who come from households of abuse and neglect.

Various departments, clubs, organizations, or individuals can choose to sponsor a child's wish list each holiday season. Each wish list includes 3 items, each no more than $25. The sponsor is asked to fulfill at least 2 of the 3 wishes. The minimum financial commitment for sponsoring a child's wish list is $50.

Wish Upon a Star was bolstered by Santa Fe College Student Government, where we provided large donations and went into the community to broadcast the program. Having the ability to donate not only my money, but my time provided a feeling of euphoria. I believe serving the community and the world in whatever manner you believe represents you, is the rent we pay for the space we take up.
